Credit by examination is subject to the following general limitations:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student or have been enrolled within the past five years at Collin College.
  • Must be TSI complete through testing or an exemption before any Credit by Exam tests can be applied to your transcript or used as a pre-requisite override.
  • A maximum of 75% of your degree requirements (approximately 45 hours) can be earned by examination.
  • Credit by examination will not be transcripted until the student has accumulated three (3) semester credit hours at Collin College.
  • Credit earned by examination may not be earned in any course for which the student has previously received a grade, either at this institution or elsewhere. (Grades of 'F' and 'W' are included)
  • Credits from Previous Institutions of Higher Learning
    • Credit previously applied at another public Texas institution of higher education will be transferred to Collin College at the student's request. Follow the transfer credit evaluation process.
    • Credit previously applied at a private or out-of-state institution of higher education will NOT be transferred to Collin College. Students who fall in this category must submit their official credit by exam score report(s) to Collin College for review prior to processing.
  • Credits earned by examination are not included in the computation of grade point average.


Credit will be awarded according to the policies in place at the time the exam is taken. Students must email creditbyexam@gxitma.net in order to receive credit for any CLEP, AP, or IB exams. Questions about Departmental Exams should be referred to the specific department.
